Jennifer Black joined San Diego Coastkeeper in June 2007 to manage Project SWELL (Stewardship: Water Education for Lifelong Leadership), a K-12 water quality and pollution prevention program that enhances the existing science curriculum in San Diego schools. Project SWELL currently reaches 40,000 students in San Diego County annually. Jennifer also oversees Coastkeeper’s Education and Outreach Campaign, manages Coastkeeper marketing efforts and coordinates media relations.

Before joining Coastkeeper, Jennifer served as Outreach Coordinator for the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation headquartered in the Washington, DC area. Jennifer raised awareness about protecting and preserving the marine environment, specifically our national marine sanctuaries. She coordinated public awareness and fundraising events, built unique public-private sector partnerships, managed special events, participated in education projects, developed communications and outreach materials and managed media relations.

Prior to her work with NMSF, Jennifer served as Communications Manager for the 18 member Pew Oceans Commission, where she was responsible for effectively communicating the commission’s findings and recommendations to constituents, members of Congress, Administration officials, and community stakeholders. She helped to implement communications strategy to engage the public in understanding marine biodiversity and supporting policies and programs critical to protecting our ocean resources.

Jennifer is a PADI certified Advanced Diver, Rescue Diver, Nitrox Diver and is currently a Dive Master Candidate. Jennifer received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin.
