Justin Hohn joined San Diego Coastkeeper in June 2008 to manage Coastkeeper’s Water Quality Laboratory, as well as assisting in Watershed Monitoring activities and Community Based Social Marketing efforts. He is also responsible for coordinating collaborations with state, academic, and non-profit organizations to increase our extensive database covering San Diego County’s diverse watersheds.

Prior to working for Coastkeeper, Justin lived in Portland, OR where he worked as a research assistant in a neurobiology laboratory working to identify novel mechanisms for the treatment or prevention of cell death in response to ischemic brain injury. Justin also volunteered for multiple non-profits, including Environmental Justice Action Group and American Lung Association, where he helped identify behavioral and low-cost/no-cost solutions to a multitude of community environmental health related concerns. In addition, he served as an Urban Tree Liaison for Portland’s Urban Forestry Department, helping with community outreach events and educational workshops.

Justin grew up along the Detroit River in Michigan and holds a Bachelors degree in Biology and Botany from Eastern Michigan University. Specializing in botanizing in riparian and inundated habitats, he also worked as a GIS contractor for a local Township. An opportunity to work as a Re-vegetation Ranger for North Cascades National Park brought him west of the Mississippi, where he has remained for some time now.
